Richard P. Spruce Bsc(Hons) MCOptom DipTp(IP)
Richard qualified in July 2004. He joined McFarlane and Nicol’s following a successful pre-registration year at Gartnavel hospital in Glasgow. in 2024 he qualified as an Independent Prescriber meaning he can prescribe a wide range of eye medicines on the NHS. He has served as chairman of the local area optical committee in the past and is currently the Vice Chair of Optometry Scotland, an organisation that helps to shape national eyecare services.
A self confessed nerd, he enjoys spending time with his family, painting miniatures, playing rugby with Hillfoots Rugby Club, as well as supporting football teams Alloa Athletic and Manchester United.
Iain D. McCall Bsc(Hons) MCOptom
Iain qualified in January 2005 after finishing his pre-registration training with a large multiple. He worked as a mobile optometrist covering Strathclyde until July 2006 when he joined McFarlanes. When not looking after people’s eyes he spends time with his family and supporting Motherwell F.C.
Dispensing Optician / Lab Manager

Douglas Richmond FBDO
Douglas qualified as a dispensing optician in 1998 whilst working for McFarlanes. He began his optical career in his home town of Ayr before joining former colleague Colin in Alloa in 1984. Douglas runs our optical lab which has provided spectacle glazing to all 4 practices since 1988. He is a keen golfer, cyclist and wood worker.
