I have a sore or red eye, what do I do?

Since October 2018, opticians have been given the responsibility to be the first port of call for sore or red eyes. Your GP is unlikely to have access to the specialised equipment and training that optometrists have.

We will assess your eye health and treat the problem ourselves if we can or refer you to the most relevant health care professional if we can’t. We have a system which allows us to rapidly access the local eye department  in case of an emergency.

Please do bear in mind though, we are not set up to offer a walk-in eye casualty service. Please phone ahead to book your appointment. An optometrist is not always available at every location at all times but we will endeavour to have you seen by an optometrist as soon as is appropriate (even if it’s at a different practice).

Our phone numbers are:

  • Alloa 01259 212420
  • Alva 01259 760366
  • Selkirk 01750 21721 / 01750 491404
  • Stenhousemuir 01324 562369

If we are closed (or there is no optometrist on duty at your practice) and you have an eye emergency phone NHS 24 for advice on 111.
